VALE – The Vikings swept Umatilla Friday at a league match in Vale. It’s the third win in a row for the team. The match against Umatilla ended in 25-2, 25-13, 25-17.
They swept Weiser on Tuesday, Oct. 1 and beat their rival Burns last month, making a stunning comeback after losing the first set by 15 points.
“We’re peaking at the right time,” Coach Shannon Steele said after the match against the Umatilla Vikings Friday.
Steele hopes they’ll keep the momentum going this weekend as they face Irrigon and Riverside in back-to-back league matches at home.
Irrigon is a strong team with a spot on libero, according to Steele. Vale and Irrigon were tied at number 13 in the OSAA rankings as of Friday, Oct. 4.
The Vikings served at 92% in the match against Umatilla.
Six players served at 100%: Jaymeson Jenson, Lexi Cleaver, Maycee DeLong, Demia Hardin, Emersyn Johnson and Alissa Fulwyler.
Demia Hardin had seven kills, Tyanna Norton had five kills and Riley Kesey had two.
Emersyn Johnson had eight aces and Taleah Zueger had three.
“We’re trying to follow the rules, as our coach says, and focus on the small things,” said junior Emersyn Johnson after the match.
